Dallas Cowboys Proprietor Jones Fined $250,000 for ‘Accidental’ Offensive Signal toward Fans

The NFL has levied a substantial $250,000 fine on Cowboys proprietor Jones for an action he claims was an “unintentional” obscene gesture made toward attendees during a recent contest at the Jets’ stadium.

Viral video clips appeared to show Jones making an obscene gesture toward opposing supporters, though he maintains he was actually giving a thumbs-up to Cowboys fans present at the game as his team secured a decisive win.

“That was unfortunate. That was essentially an exchange with Cowboys supporters out in front of us,” Jones explained during a radio appearance. “There was a swarm of Cowboys fans—not Jets fans, Cowboys fans. The whole venue was filled with enthusiasm for the Cowboys.”

He further clarified that the signal was entirely unintentional, happening amid the excitement following the team’s last score. “I just put up the incorrect digit,” he noted. “It was accidentally performed. This is sincere. Should you call it unplanned, you can. But it got resolved rapidly.”

League Context for Owner Fines

This is not the first time an league proprietor has been penalized for misconduct. Recent examples involve:

  • Panthers owner David Tepper was penalized $300K for tossing a beverage at spectators in early 2024.
  • Then Titans owner Bud Adams received a $250,000 penalty in 2009 for a similar offensive signal.

Jones, who is known for his publicity flair, reportedly has an approximate wealth of around $16bn, making the penalty easily payable for the wealthy owner.

Recent Issues and Public Spotlight

This event comes after a controversial offseason for Jones, who faced widespread criticism from the Dallas supporters after the team traded star pass rusher Micah Parsons to the Green Bay Packers.

Moreover, Jones was a prominent subject in a Netflix documentary that examined his role in developing the Cowboys into the world’s highest-worth sports franchise, despite its modern-era title shortcomings.

The league’s action to penalize Jones underscores its continuing initiative to uphold professional conduct among all team officials, regardless of their position or wealth.
