The Tottenham defender found the net on two occasions as Spurs extended their unbeaten run on the road in the Premier League and delivered Everton their first defeat at their new home.

The Toffees were undefeated in their five previous fixtures at their recently opened stadium at Bramley-Moore Dock, having left Goodison Park behind after 133 years at the conclusion of the previous campaign.

But Tottenham's leader the Dutchman pounced twice from set-pieces in the opening 45 minutes to put their strong form at jeopardy, and they were unable to turn it around before the midfielder - assisted by ex-Everton forward Richarlison - headed home a final goal to put the game to bed.

Jake O'Brien believed he had levelled the tally a short while after Van de Ven's first goal, glancing a bullet header past Guglielmo Vicario from an Everton corner.

Beto, meanwhile, failed to convert a handful of chances, while the Italian goalkeeper made a succession of excellent saves to ensure the London club went five matches on the road unbeaten in the English top flight.

But the VAR stepped in, instructing the match official to check the score on the screen and the referee decided that the winger and the attacker were in offside positions and had impeded with the Spurs keeper.

This victory elevates the manager's team up to third in the division, five points off local foes and table-toppers the Gunners.

Everton stay 14th and sit six points clear of the relegation zone.

Spurs breakdown: Van de Ven excels in role at both ends of pitch

After a uninspiring midweek display in the European competition against Monaco, where they mustered a only two shots on goal, Frank opted for Randal Kolo Muani up front instead of former Toffees player Richarlison.

The new arrival was failed to influence the game before being substituted for Richarlison after 60 minutes on the pitch, but it emerged he proved unnecessary in the final outcome.

Defender the Dutchman converted into an attacking force to be reckoned with.

Everton analysis: Everton missing striker's instinct

Everton's recent stadium had been a fortress, but it appears the freshness may have worn off somewhat and fans headed to the exits after Sarr's third for Spurs.

The end in the team's unbeaten home run will not be a major worry for David Moyes, but their attacking woes are.

The forward and the other striker - the Toffees' pair of established centre-forwards - had scored only a single goal between them before the weekend's match.

And they were unable to contribute to that miserable record on a wet and gloomy evening on in Liverpool.

Beto's form was epitomized when he chose to bicycle-kick a golden opportunity from close range, despite having room and time to readjust for a more conventional attempt that would have tested Vicario.

The substitute, as well, failed to influence the game after replacing the starter in the second half.

It wasn't for a lack of chance. Most of Everton's attacks came through the winger and the forward, who tirelessly whipped dangerous balls into the Tottenham penalty area.
