PSG Edges Olympique de Marseille on Penalties to Claim French Season-Opening Trophy in Kuwait.

PSG players celebrating

The Parisian club has now won the season-opening trophy on fourteen different occasions.

Paris Saint-Germain needed a stoppage-time equaliser followed by a successful penalty shootout to overcome Marseille in Kuwait and secure a fourth straight Trophee des Champions victory.

The Champions League holders seemed to be coasting towards a straightforward win in the match between the French league champions and the Coupe de France holders after the French winger found the net early on.

Yet, the southern French side struck twice late to take a shock lead. First, the English forward scored from the spot-kick, before the defender inadvertently turned the ball into his own net for an own goal.

In a remarkable turn of events, Goncalo Ramos grabbed a vital equaliser in the final seconds to force the contest into a penalty shootout. PSG goalkeeper Chevalier then stood as the key figure, saving crucial attempts from Matt O'Riley and Traore.

From the spot, Goncalo Ramos, the midfielder, the full-back, and Desire Doue all scored successfully for Paris Saint-Germain to seal a 4-1 shootout win.

Now 14-time champions Paris Saint-Germain, who met last season's Ligue 1 runners-up Olympique de Marseille after completing a league and cup double, have now won this competition for the twelfth time in the last 13 years.
